Garris said a vehicle hit the two victims as they were walking on the Yadkin River bridge, near the Arby's restaurant on Curtis Bridge Road. The two victims were knocked off the bridge and fell onto a grassy area underneath. Police Chief Craig Garris said right now this is a tough investigation but his officers are working aggressively to try and solve it “You’ve got to try to find out any witnesses which there are none so that doesn’t help so then we are trying to find video in the area and we used the debris field which there was a lot of debris from the vehicle involved and we worked with that to try to identify a vehicle make vehicle model make color,” said Wilkesboro police Chief Craig Garris. Garris said dispatch received a call around 2:25 p.m. Sunday afternoon to investigate after the bodies were found. Wilkesboro police Chief Garris said he does not know when the two people were hit. "Maybe they were impaired, maybe they were distracted, maybe they were using their phone. Whatever the case whatever the reason was to do the right thing to come forward and identify yourself and say it’s me and the families and the general public would respect that person if they’d do that,” he said. In a Facebook Post, the chief said, "The two people who were struck are identified as Chase Eugene Crawford, 35, and Stephanie Lynn Chahoy, 40, both of North Wilkesboro. Our condolences to their family and friends. To the driver of the vehicle that struck them, we ask that they do the decent and respectful act of coming forward and explaining why they didn't stop at the scene. The lack of compassion for your fellow man is astonishing in this case. This bridge does not have a sidewalk and should not be used for pedestrian traffic as the danger of doing so was proven with this tragic result, but it is used anyway. We are aggressively investigating this incident, but are not releasing more information at this time.
